LOCKDOWN PROJECTS

The severity of the COVID-19 pandemic caught us all by surprise and our first priority was to ensure the safety of our beneficiaries and staff.  We were however keenly aware that the lockdown and regulations would cause additional hardship for our beneficiaries and others. Endleleni obtained an Essential Services Certificate to allow us to provide services to address the needs at the most risk.

WHERE WE ARE

The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality

The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is part of the larger Ugu district on the Lower South Coast of KwaZulu Natal and consists of 29 wards, six town centres and six traditional authorities.

Beaches of world-class quality are to be found along the entire seaboard from Hibberdene to Port Edward. The coastline is dotted with numerous small towns, many of which serve as seasonal recreational hubs. However, 84% of the population live inland in rural Communities. However,  Household data- Ugu District shows that only 27% of families are economically active, mainly due to the absence of work opportunities and unemployment.

Subsequent poverty and a lack of hope of a better future lead to a basket of social ills. The district has 19% of our country’s Ultra Poor and is furthermore known as the “HIV Capital of the World” with 47.7% of people being infected – almost every second person!

FOOD DRIVE

The Pick n Pay Store in Margate made a considerable contribution which was distributed to children, elderly people and disabled people. The kind and helpful Staff made this quite the experience to remember.

Support and assistance were provided to the Mahlasedi Foundation by setting up meetings with key stakeholders in the area to facilitate their well planned task. This task was to deliver food parcels to every household in Nositha and Gamalakhe. The project was in excess of one million Rand in our area and furthermore provided income for the local community by making them part of the process, giving them the task of parcel delivery.

In partnership with Rhema South Coast Family Church and Joint Aid Management International, Endleleni was selected as a partner in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to pilot the sms -method of delivery of food parcels, there by eliminating fraud and theft. Volunteers assisted with the off-loading, sorting and packing of the food parcels for collection or delivery. This partnership resulted in close to 1800 food parcels being handed out to families of which 270 Endleleni beneficiaries received food for 3 months. This was done from our Endleleni Early Childhood Development and Nutrition Center in Nositha and Rhema South Coast Family Church in Ramsgate.

VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE

Group work during a session to identify the need for a center and map services to women in destress

The already high incidence of Gender Based Violence in South Africa was exacerbated by the lockdown, subsequent financial and other family pressures. In June, following all protocols, Endleleni called a meeting with 25 organizations. The outcome of the meeting was that all services for victims of violence and vulnerable women were mapped and gaps in services were identified. The most glaring gap is the absence of emergency accommodation. Due to donor hesitance none of the partners were able to secure funds for a property to provide this service. Endleleni assisted various women with their immediate needs as well as ongoing counselling and referral to other services.

OLD AGE CARE

As the usual scheduled services of the ProDeo Care group for the elderly was disrupted, each member continued to care for their clients.   Distress calls increased for assistance with the purchase of groceries, collecting medication, taken to hospital or doctors for medical care, anxiety, loneliness and desperate financial situations. In some cases, all that could be done was to make a person comfortable, arrange for cooked meals, clean up their accommodation and provide clean linen and clothing – having to resort to burning soiled and dirty items.

CHILDREN WITH DISABLITITIES IN GAMALAKHE

Endleleni continued their role as the the liaison person between the Center and donors to ensure that every child is developed to their full potential , receive quality care and optimal nutrition.

It was with deep sadness that  Mrs. Sibongile Biyela, the Center Manager,  was laid to rest after passing away suddenly.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND NUTRITION CENTER NOSITHA

Our first project ,which commenced in 2009 , has to date benefitted 330 children ( 30 four to five year old’s per annum). Children are from ultra poor families in the Nositha community , usually older women who care for them that had no education themsleves and are unable to pay any fees.

The BrainBoosters program is an early childhood development program which lays the foundation for life long learning by teaching children colours, shapes, numbers, my body (for child safety) and food. Through or longstanding relationship with the Nositha primary school , children are promoted to grade R and “uncle Schalk and uncle Neil” continue to be greeted by children at school who had completed the program often reporting “ I am the cleverst child in my class or I am the best in English” or another subject.

Our 3 BrainBoosters trained teachers, also identify early signs of abuse or neglect and social workers are alerted to visit families.

On an annual basis “Child Protective Behaviours” training are provided to the community for teachers, parents and children to identify the early signs of abuse, whereand who to report it to and how to deal with a child that reports abuse. Most importantly children are taught how to “tell” and protect themselves

A key focus remains the prevention of hunger and stunted growth and early development of vulnerable children

THE ELDERLY

The Endleleni qualified Nurse is a volunteer at the Pro Deo Care group for the elderly in Margate, providing primary healthcare services to 20 elderly people per month.

With the ongoing effect of the Covid 19 pandemic, monthly clinics are still unable to resume.

Endleleni continues to respond to crisis calls to provide support to the elderly – food parcels, access to medical care, collection of medication, cleaning of homes and washing and any immediate assistance required as identified by a full assessment done on their health and socio-economic situation.

The way in which we treat our Senior citizens and children is a yardstick of the moral fibre of our society.

THE RIGHT TO DECIDE PROJECT

The Right to Decide Project, Located in Ramsgate, KwaZulu Natal is a partnership of organizations that provide counselling and support services to:

  • Teenagers and single women in late stage of pregnancy who decide to keep their babies or have them placed in alternative care.
  • Women in vulnerable communities are affected by disasters such as fires, floods and other crisis situations.

The above beneficiaries face a multitude of challenges – discrimination , alienation from the community , vulnerable to abuse and no means to access services or support. The situation is exacerbated by the high incidence of HIV and AIDS and the region was identified as the HIV capital of the world.

Many young women are not aware of their HIV status and furthermore driven by fear, anxiety and depression, pregnancies are hidden until a late stage and they revert to abandoning babies and inflict  self-harm.

Individual assessment ensures that appropriate services are provided, in the strictest confidentiality, by trained and experienced counsellors, a qualified nurse, a social worker and volunteers.

Support is focussed on empowering women to make important life decisions whether returning to school, finding employment, reintegration back into their families and community and making positive long- term life decisions.

Women who have overcome these situations fulfil an important role in providing emotional support to others that come onto the program, being testimony that there is a future and a hope.
